25 Days of Christmas: Day 8

By Kathy Nicholls

Today it's all about Christmas stockings! Do you know how this tradition came about? It's said that a nobleman had three daughters. His wife had died and left him in a state of grief. When it came time for his daughters to marry, he had no dowry for them. One evening the daughters, after washing their stockings hung them near the fire place to be dried. Santa Claus, being moved by the plight of the daughters, came in and put in three bags of gold one in each of the stocking hanging by the chimney. The next morning the family noticed the gold bags and the nobleman had enough for his daughter's marriage. The daughters got married and they lived happily ever after. Since then children have been hanging Christmas stockings.
You might also remember the stories about your stocking that said if you weren't good all year, all Santa would leave was a lump of coal.
When I was young, our stockings always had some certain things. There was an apple, an orange, and some nuts. They also had some candies, maybe a very small toy of some kind, and they always had a candy cane stuck at the top. It was one of the fun things we did on Christmas morning.
