Remember 'Lassie' the Collie that went for help when the child was in the well, or the magnificent Saint Bernard dog who rescued the skier buried in an avalanche?
Sure they were on TV, but we all know there are many animals who do more and harder work than we do; not for glory or praise (although they get plenty of hugs and belly rubs) but because of their natural instincts and their wonderful trainers. They sniff bombs, bodies (alive and dead), danger, and disease, all to rescue or assist humans. They are eyes for the blind and ears for the hearing-impaired. There are pigs that sense disease or distress and notify their owner. Dogs and cats are faithful companions for the elderly and bring joy to those in assisted living and similar facilities. All of this done with unconditional love.
I know from experience. My childhood dog was my best friend. We went everywhere together. I rode my bike and he ran with me. We went to the park and stayed all day. He followed me into the stream, across the ball field and into the woods. He never left my side.
He also saved me from harm and possibly saved my life. I was home alone with my dog when someone broke into our basement took a fishing knife from my Dad's tool box and started up the stairs to the living room. My dog heard him and ran to the door barking. I opened the door and the dog jumped from the floor onto the man, who was half way up the steps, and knocked him down the steps. He was so frightened he ran. This man was later caught after injuring another young girl.
My faithful companion and fierce protector.
There are many animals in need of a home - all ages all sizes. They are in your local Humane Society or other facilities near you, waitng to love and care for you whatever your need. All they want is your love in return.
If you can help by adopting one, please don't hesitate. If you can't for some reason, at least go to the humane society and walk a dog, play with a kitten, drop off some dog food to help care for them.
They need us and we need them!
Check out the puppies here on my blog. You can contact the owners or those who have some for adoption - 'The Daily Puppy' - just click on the one you like!
