"Have you hugged your kids today?" I imagine you have, if they live in the same house as you. But, have you contacted your kids that don't live at home, or your parents, or any other family members??
It doesn't matter how old you are, if you work, or any other excuse (like 'the soup's too hot...I just pressed my shoelaces...the lawnmower is broken...I just ate a mothball....' These are as good as any!!)
There isn't a reason to complain that they don't call, e-mail, or visit you, if you haven't called, e-mailed or visited them. Relationships of any type are two way streets.
It really isn't painful to be the first to reach out.
Here comes the hard part - don't condemn or expect. If they never reach out to contact you, you have a choice - either choose to continue keeping in touch with them because you want to, or break the relationship because you want to.
We all go through times when we are extremely busy, sick, forgetful, or just plain lazy and our desire to communicate wanes. So it may be a while before we take time to sit down and 'just do it'. However long the wait, catching up is always fulfilling.
Remember: You set the example and hopefully they will follow.
