Does the 'me first' instinct cause us to be one or the other?
I'm not talking football, I'm talking 'talk'.
Something unexpected happens - is my immediate response a sarcastic, 'Thanks a lot for that'? Or is it a pitiful, 'I didn't do it'?
Time to stop and think before opening mouth.
What will sarcasm accomplish other than causing someone else to feel inferior? - Oh, causing me to feel superior! What will a pitiful defense accomplish other than relieving me of guilt? - Oh, laying the blame elsewhere!
In the long run, either way, I will feel better! And someone else will feel worse.
MEDITATE ON THIS:
I AM NOT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE
I am only the center of MY universe. Things don't happen TO ME, they just happen.
The next time I am tempted to respond with my old way of thinking, I will instead consider why it happened. Was the perpetrator responding to something outside of this transaction. (Did he switch off your favorite sexy TV show because a child entered the room?) Then , my response will be a genuine 'Thanks a lot'.
She asks, 'who broke the glass?' I know it wasn't me so, the most honest and harmless response would be, 'I don't know" or 'I'm sure it was an accident .'
The tongue is a weapon. If used in either offense or defense,
IT STILL CAUSES WOUNDS.
P.S. If I wanted to go a step further, I could clean up the glass - no matter who broke it!
